Owning a vehicle comes with the responsibility of regular maintenance and timely repairs. While some issues may seem minor at first, delaying some repairs can lead to larger issues and even the complete failure of your vehicle. That said, there are some auto services that are more pressing than others. An overhead light going out is an annoyance, for example, but it won't impact your driving experience.
But if you find yourself needing some extra motivation to make that service appointment for something that's not worth risking the wait, here are the top five auto repairs you shouldn’t put off.
The condition of your brakes will determine, in large part, how quickly your vehicle is able to slow down and stop. The brake system uses wear-and-tear parts, meaning you should expect to replace parts like rotors and brake pads eventually. In fact, the brake pads have wear indicators as the material lessens, which creates a squealing noise when you brake to let you know that it's time for service. So if you notice squeaking, grinding, or any other issues with your brakes, such as a brake pedal that is either too easy or too difficult to press, get your vehicle into the auto repair shop.
Keep in mind that tires, the next item on the list, also contribute to your vehicle's stopping performance.
Tires are your vehicle's only contact with the road, making their maintenance vital for safety and performance.
If you notice uneven wear, bulges, low air pressure (or overinflated tires), or low tread depth, address the issue promptly. You should check tire pressure levels monthly at a minimum and re-air your tires as needed. Under-inflated or worn tires can lead to blowouts and loss of control while driving. Overinflated tires are also not good. They can result in less traction and faster tread wear in the middle of the tire. If you notice strange tread wear, it can also be related to other issues, like misalignment.
Regardless of what's going on with your tires, you'll want to have them inspected and repaired as needed.
Fluid leaks can lead to serious issues with your vehicle. Whether it’s oil, coolant, transmission fluid, or brake fluid, any leak should be investigated immediately. Ignoring fluid leaks can lead to the engine overheating, transmission failure, or a compromised braking system. Regularly check fluid levels and address leaks to maintain your vehicle’s reliability.
A failing car battery can leave you stranded and may damage other electrical components in your vehicle. Signs of battery trouble include dimming headlights, slow engine cranking, or corrosion on battery terminals. A battery warning light may also illuminate on the dashboard. Most automotive batteries last between 3-5 years, so if you're within this timeframe, be aware that the battery may begin to show signs that it's on its way out. You can have your car battery tested to see how much of a charge it's able to hold and get a replaced battery installed if needed.
The check engine light is a warning sign that shouldn’t be ignored. It can indicate a variety of issues, and while everyone hopes it's a loose gas cap, it can also be a faulty oxygen sensor, issue with the mass airflow sensor, bad sparkplug, wiring issue, and a variety of other causes. Typically, the engine light will be red if your vehicle determines the issue is serious, but that doesn't mean you should keep driving around with an orange or yellow check engine light. It's better to know what's going on, because it is something that is impacting your vehicle's performance and, if not addressed, could lead to additional issues.
While these aren't the only five issues that deserve prompt attention, they are some of the top ones to keep in mind as you and your vehicle embark on adventures near and far.
